Suspecting that the local police is in hand-in-glove with film producer Rahul Raj Singh and would not probe her daughter’s suicide in an appropriate manner, Shoma Banerjee on Wednesday approached the Bombay high court seeking an investigation into her TV actress daughter Pratyusha’s death by the crime branch of Mumbai police.
Pratyusha had committed suicide on April 1, and as per the police, her live-in-partner Rahul abetted her to commit suicide and hence, the police wanted to arrest him. Rahul, however, approached the high court and got interim protection from arrest.
Advocate K.T. Thomas on behalf of Shoma mentioned the petition before the division bench headed by Justice Naresh H. Patil and sought an urgent hearing. He told the court that the investigation currently being done by the Bangur Nagar police was misleading and hence, they wanted a probe by the crime branch. “The investigation being done by the local police is misleading and we fear that in future it will be scuttled. We are seeking the probe to be transferred to the crime branch under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police,” said Mr Thomas.
When the bench asked the petitioner what made them think that the investigation done by the local police was misleading, Mr Thomas said the death took place on April 1, but the FIR was registered only on April 5 and the manner in which the police has been recording the statements of the accused and witnesses looked like it was in collusion with the accused (Rahul).
After hearing arguments the court posted the petition for hearing on Thursday. The court has also asked the public prosecutor to bring all records concerned from the police station.
