Bharip Bahujan leader Prakash Ambedkar on Sunday conducted a conference on annihilation of caste in Nagpur where he has blamed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for dividing the Hindu religion on the basis of caste and class.
This came in the backdrop of on going political events such as the suicide of Dalit PhD student Rohith Vemula of the University of Hyderabad, the arrest of JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar on charges of sedition, among others. Mr Ambedkar has blamed right wing organisations for caste-based discrimination.
“This is the era of ending casteism and evolution of ‘nationalism’. They (RSS) want to divide people in Hindu religion on the lines of caste and class. They speak of cultural nationalism without defining what is their interpretation of cultural nationalism. They want the Hindus of the country to rule this country. But within the Hindu religion there are two folds. One set is the Vedics and the others are saints. The RSS preaches Vedics which is based on Manusmriti and the saints preach brotherhood and fraternity. They are preaching their own interpretation of Hindu religion,” said Mr Ambedkar
Manusmriti is an ancient Hindu text, which among other issues also codifies the caste system. The controversy goes back to when on March 8, 2016 JNU students belonging to the leftist group along with ABVP rebels burnt copies of Manusmriti alleging the ancient text was anti-women and labelled women as the property of the family having no rights as individual or collectively.
Mr Ambedkar further added the RSS was ruling the country and BJP was just its puppet. “I openly invite Mohan Bhagwat to come in the public domain and discuss and let people decide whom they want,” he said. There should be equality and social order in the society, he said.
