More than 225 Muslim men, most of them professionals, have denounced and demanded abolition and declaration as illegal the practice of triple talaq (instant divorce) and nikaah-halala that is practiced in India. These men have condemned the ulemas who are supporting the practice, which has been already discontinued in 21 Islamic countries.
Firoze Mithiborwala, a social activist, said the Muslim men supported the demand of the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) and other organisations for the abolition of triple talaq and nikaah-halala.
“They include award winners and prominent personalities from the film industry and theatre: Resul Pookutty (Oscar Award winner), Saeed Mirza, Javed Siddiqi, Hasan Kamaal, Anjum Rajabali, Shafaat Khan, Talat Jaani, Feroz Abbas Khan,” said Mr Mithiborwala.
“The triple talaq is banned in more than 21 Muslim majority countries, including Pakistan,” added Mr Mithiborwala.
He said the professionals rejected the claim of the ulema that the Muslim Personal Law in India is a “God-given” law.
“There is no mention of the instant talaq practice in the Quran. In fact, the Quran clearly stipulates an obligatory three-month period during which attempts must be made at reconciliation and mediation before severing the marital bond. Triple talaq violates the Constitutional principles of gender parity and non-discrimination. It is un-Quranic and un-Constitutional,” said Mr Mithiborwala.
