Call it an effect of the desilting scam unearthed last year. But leaders of all political parties have taken to review the nullah cleaning works across the city.
On Thursday, leaders from Shiv Sena, BJP and Congress visited the desilting works separately. While the ruling parties blamed the civic administration for shoddy desilting works, the Congress has slammed both the Sena and the BJP for the inadequate cleaning of the city nullahs.
BJP MP Kirit Somaiya visited the desilting works of nullahs in the eastern suburbs, whereas Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam and opposition leader Pravin Chheda reviewed desilting works in the western suburbs. Shiv Sena’s Rajendra Suryavanshi and Anant Nar, work committee chairpersons of city and suburbs especially, visited the nullah cleaning works in the city and suburbs.
“BMC’s claims that pre-monsoon desilting works in the city will be completed before May 31 have been proven to be hollow,” said Mr Somaiya. “At several places, the nullah cleaning works are still going on, which means that Mumbaikars will have to see clogged nullahs during the monsoon.”
He also hit out at his alliance partner saying they just made a tour of desilting works and carried out a photo session. But the works are still pending, he added.
Mr Chheda alleged that desilting works have started only after they missed the deadline of May 31. “The BMC has failed completely in carrying out desilting works. It has removed only the floating material, whereas the silt is still lying in city nullahs,” he said.
Shiv Sena leaders said that while major nullahs have been cleaned, the minor nullahs are still filled with silt. To ensure proper desilting, the party has asked its corporators to inspect nullah cleaning works in their respective wards.
