The recent transfer of surplus teachers by the education department after conducting the student/teacher ratio survey has not gone down well with the teachers who have been given transfers to different regions of the state. MLC Kapil Patil, representing the teachers’ constituency, has said that while the government is trying to ensure that there is optimal use of teachers and has sent surplus teachers where there are none, it has overlooked the fact that now specialised teachers will teach other subjects, which will lead to poor quality of education and students will suffer.

Terming the move by the government as “callous and unplanned,” Mr Patil said that the while the transfer of teachers has addressed one problem, it has created a new problem in its wake.

“The transfers have not been based on any logic, but have been random. The government now expects teachers specialising in one language to teach the other two language subjects too. Similarly, there will be only one teacher to teach science and maths. In such a scenario, how does the government expect the quality of education to improve It will only degrade further,” said Mr Patil.

He said that the transfers had been based on an August 2015 decision of the government and even though the above shortcoming had been pointed out, the government failed to take cognisance.

“As the education department is making one disastrous blunder after another, I have been forced to write to the chief minister and draw his attention to the problem. I hope that Mr Devendra Fadnavis will take corrective measures and direct the education department to act judiciously,” said Mr Patil, adding that such transfers would also impact the preparations of students for competitive and entrance exams and tests.
