In a bid to strengthen its workforce, the Maharashtra police has decided to empower all police stations of Thane commissionerate by providing it with free Wi-Fi facility.

On Saturday, state DG Pravin Dixit inaugurated the service in the Thane commissioner’s office premises. Mr Dixit praised the idea of providing Wi-Fi internet facility and encouraging officials to use new technologies and social sites to solve crimes.

The idea was conceived after officials from the Joister Infomedia Pvt. Ltd, a broadband and gaming service provider company, approached the city joint commissioner’s office. Joint commissioner Ashutosh Dhumbre said, “A senior police inspector liked the idea and he approached me regarding the same. We need to have a Wi-Fi connection at every police station and have our own WhatsApp group to co-ordinate with each other. Also, if we want to transfer any documents from one police station to any other place, then it will be easy for all the officials, as they will be able to send the same from any computer or device. Also, there are 9,000 police personnel in Thane district, besides over 6,000 police-mitras. Hence, 15,000 people directly concerned with policing job can avail this facility free of cost, which would subsequently ease our work.”

One of the senior police officer said, “We are facing problems such as having only one computer with internet access. It will be easier for us to search and conduct research on the internet to solve a case.”

The Wi-Fi facility has already been installed and started phase by phase, i.e at police headquarters and a few police stations around the Thane city. In another one month, other police stations under the Thane jurisdiction will also have free Wi-Fi.
