A 77-year-old senior citizen was found dead in suspicious conditions in the Pathanwadi area of Malad (east) and the police is probing the incident. The woman, who was ailing since a long time and had lost her eyesight, was staying in the 10th floor of a building along with her 55-year-old daughter and four grandsons. Her body was found on the ground floor with head injuries and multiple fractures.

The deceased Rahmat Bi Suleman Banani was staying with her daughter Hamida Ayyub Paunjwani (55). The family owns a 3BHK flat and the deceased had a small room of her own, the police said.

According to the police, Rahmat Bi was unable to walk and she was almost blind. The police said her body was lying exactly near the wall of the building, while when a person jumps on their own, they fall further away from the wall. “Her body was lying under the area of their flat’s hall and Rahmat Bi would not have been able to walk till that area without any help. The wall of that balcony is also two feet tall and such an old woman can’t jump from this wall,” a police official said.

On Saturday, the day of the incident, Hamida had gone to Gujarat while Rahmat Bi was at home with her grandson Asif, a music composer, his wife and another grandson Saddam.

Her body was seen by a local resident at about 6 am on Saturday, who informed the police. According to the police sources, the CCTV footage of the building has been sought. Members of the locality have informed the police that Rahmat Bi was a short-tempered woman and she often used to abuse her daughter and grandchildren.

The police has booked a case under section 302 (murder) of IPC against unknown persons. While the postmortem report is awaited, further inquiry is on.
