The Thane police is sending call recordings and hard discs to the Mumbai-based Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in the conspiracy related to the running of eight call centres in the district, whose employees allegedly extorted the citizens of United States in the name of their tax and immigration authorities.

The police has collected thousands of hard discs that from every floor of the call centres concerned. Currently, the police is sorting out the hardware.

The Thane police raided eight call centres in the Thane district so far and thousands of employees were found working on each of their floors.

Police officers said, “We have collected thousands of hard discs and we are sorting out those that have content which could help our investigation and we are gathering all the data into one or two hard discs, which we will send it to the forensic laboratory in Kalina so that we can use them as a legal evidence.”

The Thane police has added three new sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the case: 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy).

The police has arrested 74 employees under IPC sections 384 (extortion), 419 (cheating by impersonation), 420 (cheating) and sections of the IT Act and Indian Telegraph Act.

The police has the recorded statements of more than 500 call centre employees and is still looking for the masterminds of the racket.
