On Mother’s Day on Sunday, a 24-year-old woman received an unparalleled gift from Malwani police of Malad in the form of her two-year-old son, who had been kidnapped on May 7. Police officials said the toddler was kidnapped by his mother’s former colleague because she had blocked his phone number and ended their friendship about a fortnight ago. The accused, one Shyam Mandal (25), a resident of Azmi Nagar, Malwani, was nabbed from Surat and the child handed over to his mother.

Milind Khetle, senior police inspector of Malwani police station, said that the minor boy, Arnav Patil, was kidnapped by Mr Mandal at around 5.30pm on May 7 when he was at his aunt’s house in Malad (west). While the kid’s family stays in Malad (east). Nearly five years ago, his mother used to work in a Jain hospital in Goregaon (west) where Mr Mandal too was working. Eventually, the two became friends.

Around six months back, a dispute occurred between the woman and Mr Mandal and she broke their friendship. About fifteen days ago, she also blocked Mr Mandal’s phonenumber. Thereafter, Mr Mandal personally contacted her and the duo got into a fighton Saturday afternoon. Soon after, Mr Mandal kidnapped Arnav.

Later, a complaint was lodged in Malwani police station and officials started tracking Mr Mandal. In the course of the investigation, they came to know that Mr Mandal was on his way to Surat. A police team under PSI Dilip Salunkhe was dispatched which arrested Mr Mandal who had Arnav with him. The team returned to the city on Monday morning and Arnav was handed over to his parents.
