Police rescue 9 minors from jewellery unit

The social service branch along with Kurar police of Malad area rescued nine child labourers from an imitation jewellery unit. Police arrested the owner, partner, and two supervisors of the unit identified as Sandip Nirmal Jana, Jayprakash Tilakdhari Yadav, Bikas Gunedhar Sawanth, and Panas Chand Panja. They were produced in court on Tuesday and remanded to police custody.
The minors had been brought from Assam by the accused on the pretext of providing jobs in Mumbai. However, the children were forced to work in the unit without payment. Cops received a complaint on the child helpline after which, they conducted a raid at 9.15 pm on Monday at the unit located in Appad Pada area of Anand Nagar in Kurar. All four accused have been booked under sections 342 (wrongful confinement) and 347 (wrongful confinement to extort property, or constrain to illegal act) of the IPC along with relevant sections of the Child Labour Act.
