The police said Sheikh, who, according to some sources, was a bar dancer, had been living in the chawl for the past six months on rent. While Sheikh was identified after the recovery of her Aadhaar card, the address given in the card — placing Sheikh in Ulhasnagar — has been found to be fake. The police is also trying to trace the origins of the deceased.
According to a senior official from Dahisar police station, the police team had rushed to the chawl on Thursday following a tip off. On reaching the spot, they found the house locked from the inside and the body lying on the floor.
A noose made from a dupatta was hanging from a fan. The woman was taken to Shatabdi Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Following this, the police had registered an ADR.
