In a fatal hit-and-run accident on a national highway, a 45-year-old assistant police sub-inspector was killed on Sunday morning after a speeding truck hit his bike and fled the spot without rendering help in Bhandara district.
According to the Maharashtra state highway police, deceased Bhaskar Vanzare was posted at the Karda police station. He had completed his night duty and was homebound around 11.30 am when the incident occurred.
Vanzare was near the Karda toll naka on National Highway 6 also known as the Mumbai-Kolkata highway, when the speeding truck rammed him from behind and escaped from the spot. Mr Vanzare, said the police, died on the spot due to grievous body injuries.
One of the passing motorists called up the police control room after which Vanzare was rushed to a civil hospital where he was pronounced dead. An FIR has been registered against an unidentified motorist under Section 304 A (causing death due to negligence) pf the Indian Penal Code and under the Motor Vehicle Act for running away from the spot without rendering help to the victim.
A post-mortem will be conducted, after which the body will be handed over to Vanzare’s family. The police is checking the CCTV cameras at the toll naka to find out if it has captured the footage of the truck’s registration number.
“We are also trying to find out if there are any eyewitnesses to the incident. We will also analyse the spot to find out if there are any more factors due to which the accident took place apart from the truck driver’s negligence,” said an official from the highway traffic police.
