The police on Tuesday kicked off a special drive for local residents to create awareness about the growing trend of conmen posing as police officials to rob citizens.
The initiative comes on the back of the May 6 incident where an elderly woman was cheated by three men posing as cops, who made away with her gold ornaments. This happened under the jurisdiction of D.B. police after which, Dongri and D.B. Marg police on Tuesday initiated the campaign.
Police officials said the city is very crowded nowadays with several tourists and visitors coming down due to summer holidays; a situation that conmen are taking advantage of.
An official from Dongri police station said they suspected a south Mumbai gang that was well-organised and hoped to arrest members of the gang in the coming week. However, they were also trying to reach out to people, through channels like WhatsApp, to make them aware of the existence of such conmen.
Dongri senior police inspector Vilas Gangwane has ordered his officials to circulate a message that reads: “If anyone approaches you stating that they are police officials, verify their rank, batch and the police station they are attached with and ask for their identity cards. No police officials will ask you to remove your gold ornaments on roads and if the persons approaching you ask you to do so, note down their vehicle number.”
Earlier on April 28 , a 33-year-old man was robbed by cheats using a similar modus operandi where the accused told him that they were police officials and asked for cash from him.
