The Bandra police on Monday arrested a 30-year-old security guard who had burgled gold, diamonds and other jewels collectively worth around '47 lakh from a jewellery store in Bandra (west) on Friday night. The police has recovered all of the burgled valuables, something seldom seen in house-breaking theft cases. According to the Bandra police, the incident took place in “Popley”, a popular jewellery at Turner road. The accused, Nitesh Shrivastav, has been working as a security guard at the store for the past one year and was entrusted with its keys. He lives in the city with his wife and a two-year-old daughter. Shrivastav stole the jewellery on Friday night and thought it would go unnoticed. However, his owner, on opening the shop on Saturday morning, saw that some of jewellery on display had gone missing. Shrivastav then managed to run away. Detection officer, sub-inspector Nandkumar Gaikwad, said, “He is from Delhi and was thinking of escaping to the city. Acting on a tip-off, we nabbed him from near the Bandra railway terminus.” Investigating officer, sub-inspector Surendra Belkhede said, “He was produced before the magistrate’s court and remanded in our custody till October 9 for further probe.” An official said that the store owner had registered the guard’s credentials with the local police which made tracking him easier.
