Pipeline burst affects water supply in F ward
Certain areas in Parel, Matunga, Lal Baug and Kings Circle faced a severe shortage of water supply on Wednesday morning after part of the New Tansa pipeline, which supplies water to these areas, burst around 6 am. These areas received water supplied at a very low pressure in the beginning of the morning, after which the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had to cut off the water supply entirely.
The pipeline burst also led to minor flooding in parts of Parel and Matunga, which led to traffic diversions during the rush hours of the morning.
Sources in the BMC said the 20-foot-long damaged portion of the pipeline would be replaced on Wednesday night.
The civic body has assured residents of the F-south and F-north wards that the water supply to this area would be resumed by Thursday morning.
The same pipeline had also burst near Chitra Cinema about two years ago, and the BMC had replaced the damaged portion at the time.
The 1,200-mm New Tansa pipeline supplies water to the F-south and F-north wards. It is several decades old. On Wednesday morning, water started leaking from the pipe leading to a bit of flooding in the Five Gardens area, since the water supply had not yet started.
Then, when the BMC started its morning water supply, a portion of the pipeline burst completely, spurting water out.
A civic official said, “The pipeline is over 10 feet under the ground. So we do not know how much damage has been caused. The workers have been trying to repair the pipeline all day on Wednesday.”
The official added that the BMC has assured that the water supply to these areas will be resumed on Thursday morning.
