Petition seeks high-level probe in Pratyusha Banerjee case

The parents of television actress Pratyusha Banerjee have put up an online signature petition demanding a high-level inquiry into the death of their daughter.

The parents of television actress Pratyusha Banerjee have put up an online signature petition demanding a high-level inquiry into the death of their daughter. Soma and Shankar Banerjee, Pratyusha’s parents, allege her death was not a suicide but a murder.

The petition has been put up on www.change.org. After going live late Wednesday evening, it had garnered 346 supporters till Friday evening. It needs 500 supporters for the petition to be considered complete. The petition is addressed to Union home minister Rajnath Singh and PM Narendra Modi. The Banerjee couple had last month paid a visit to Mr Singh to demand a high-level inquiry.

In the petition, Soma Banerjee alleged that the police is trying to close the case by addressing it as a suicide while the parents believe she was murdered. The parents also alleged that the police ignored the statements of Pratyusha’s domestic help and other witnesses. Calling the role of the police in the case “suspicious”, they demanded a CBI inquiry in the case. The petition has comments from more than 100 fans of Pratyusha from various countries supporting the demand.

Commenting on the petition, Pratyusha’s father Shankar told The Asian Age, “I am an NGO worker and earlier we used to get support by organising signature campaigns. Now it’s a digital generation so we decided to put it online. (Pratyusha) changed her Whatsapp display picture on the same day (she died) and the picture has no marks or injuries on her face but there were several marks on her dead body, which shows that she was beaten up badly before her death,” Mr Banerjee said.
