Peter, a man of low morals: Ex-wife

Former media baron Peter Mukerjea’s former wife and a witness in the Sheena Bora murder case in her statement has said that her former husband was a man of low morals and had a roving eye.
Peter had filed an application before the special CBI court seeking a copy of the statement of witness No. 32 whom the investigating agency had termed as secret witness. Peter was refused a copy of this witness’ statement.
The secret witness, however, turned out to be Peter’s former wife Shabnam Singh whose statement was already recorded and was part of the chargesheet filed against Peter; however her supplementary statement was recorded and that copy was not provided to the accused.
In this supplementary statement, Ms Singh has stated, “Peter has no morals and was always fascinated by young women around him. He was fond of late night parties and had several women in his life. So, I decided to break my marriage with him.”
Peter’s lawyer Mihir Gheewala termed this statement ‘useless’.
“This is a useless piece of evidence, which shows the desperation of CBI as they have no concrete material against Peter and now they have resorted to character assassination,” said Mr Gheewala.
Advocate Mr Gheewala also claimed that this statement was recorded to prejudice the public at large. He further said that in criminal law the bad character of a person could not be cited.
Ms Singh in her statement has also said that after their divorce, Peter introduced to her prime accused Indrani as his girlfriend. “He told me that they were planning to marry shortly. I wished him good luck and told him ‘tum nahin sudhroge’ (you won’t mend your ways). I thought he would not marry her and dump her like his previous girlfriends as he had a penchant for young women,” said Ms Singh.
According to her statement, Peter married Indrani despite being warned of her reputation in Kolkata. She told the agency that she had once received a phone call from Indrani, who allegedly told her to finalise the lump sum alimony amount she wanted and that it should not be unreasonable. “I got angry and told her to mind her own business as the matter was between Peter and I. Then I disconnected the phone,” the statement read.
