Overspeeding trailer crushes cop to death, injures three

A police constable died on Thursday morning after the driver of a trailer failed to control his speed and hit him. The incident occurred in S.V road, Wadala, and the constable died on the spot. The trailer also hit seven other vehicles due to which three people were injured.

Sajiv Tukaram Patil (52) a police constable and resident of Antop hill area was out for his morning walk around 7 am when the incident took place. He was walking on the S.V road when the trailer was heading towards him from the front. The driver could not control the speed of the vehicle on reaching a speed breaker and took a sudden left turn and hit Patil. The constable’s head was crushed under the trailer’s wheels. Unable to gain control of the vehicle, the driver also hit seven taxis and a car, resulting in the injury of three people.

After being alerted, the Wadala police rushed to the spot and arrested the trailer’s driver Devendra Kumar Singh. A complaint has also been registered against him.

Patil is survived by his wife and daughter. The accused was driving from Navi Mumbai to Mumbai. The trailer was empty and taking advantage of the traffic-free roads, he was driving above the speed limit. Police officials have conducted his medical test to check whether he was drunk. The result is awaited.
