A fine of about Rs 67 crore has been collected from the offenders during this time.

During the six-month period, from January to July last year, 12,999 road accidents were reported in Mumbai, in which 292 people lost their lives.

This was revealed in the written reply given by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in the state legislative council on Wednesday.

According to the data by state officials, 20,48,604, 21,00,342 and 18,55,110 traffic violation cases were reported in 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively. Fines of Rs 23.09 crore, Rs 22.59 crore and Rs 21.21 crore were collected in the corresponding years.

Factors such as over speeding, breaking signals, drunk driving, negligence and violation of traffic rules were mainly responsible for these accidents.

Apart from this, some of the accidents take place owing to mistakes by pedestrians like not using pavements, subways and zebra crossing to walk on or cross the roads.

“To reduce the number of accidents, action is taken against those who violate the traffic rules under the Vehicle Motor Act. To create awareness, instructions are issued via the media to follow the traffic rules. In addition to this, road safety weeks are also organised with the help from schools, colleges and social institutes,” said state officials.

In Mumbai, about 26 lakh vehicles are running, whereas 1.5 lakh vehicles visit the the city on a daily basis.
