There was good news for the mill workers as Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced more than 5,000 homes in Mumbai and outside Mumbai and within Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to be handed over to them in the upcoming days. He also agreed to take action against mill owners who have not surrendered land to the government to construct houses for mill workers.

Mr Fadnavis informed the House on Tuesday that a meeting was held between mill worker union leader Datta Iswalkar, Jayashri Khadilkar and others to resolve the issue of homes for mill workers. According to Mr Fadnavis, 2,634 houses are under construction in Mumbai on the land of six mills, whereas 2,418 houses are ready to be allotted to mill workers in the MMR region.

There are 1,430 flats are under construction on the land of Century Mill, 562 houses on Prakash Mill, 188 houses on Bharat Mill, 47 houses on Ruby Mill, 157 houses on Jubilee Mill and 250 houses on land of Western India Mill, said Mr Fadnavis.
