A 35-year-old jewellery-maker committed suicide in his house near Bhuleshwar on Tuesday. According to the LT Marg police he was suffering from some health issues. However, his family said he killed himself because his source of income had stopped because of the jewellers’ strike.
Sushant Samant had come to Mumbai four years ago from Kolkata. For the past two years he was working with a jeweller as a jewellery- maker in Bhuleshwar area.
The police said he was living with four other colleagues in the building. They used to get payment on a weekly basis. However, for the past 32 days no one had received a single rupee.
One of Samant’s friends said, “ We had some saving because of which we are able to survive but Sushant got married last year and he spent all his savings on the wedding. Recently, he had also started falling ill because of frequent weather changes. So whatever money he had was spent on his treatment. He was not feeling well for the past one week.”
LT Marg police said, “Sushant was suffering from cold and fever. On Monday night, his roommate told him that he was going out to bring some food. At that time no one was at home except Sushant. He was wearing a muffler owing to the cold and when his friend came back he saw that Sushant had hanged himself from the fan with the same muffler. We have registered an accidental death report (ADR) in the incident.”
The Jewellery Trade Federation, along with representatives from majority of jewellery associations across the country, has unanimously decided to strike to protest against the government’s proposal to implement excise duty on the gems and jewellery sector.
More than 3 lakh jewellers, including manufacturers and artisans are participating in the strike that was implemented from March 2, 2016.
