A gang of thieves who stole a bag containing diamond-studded ornaments and Rs 98.37 in cash from a person travelling in a BEST bus on January 27 was busted by the Mumbai crime branch. Both ornaments and cash worth Rs 84 lakh were recovered, while a case of robbery has been registered with the V.B. Nagar police station.

Officials said that the gang of four — Sudhir Raibhan (38), Yusuf Shaikh (43), Abdul Jabbar (43), and Qaiyum Qureshi (39) — has looted several other businessmen before.

Most of them have numerous cases of robbery registered against them and apparently, will start their activities after consuming drugs.

Crime branch Unit VI officials said that the gang would keep an eye on businessmen and traders, and follow them.

This time around, they followed the bus route used by wholesale traders to transport cash before the afternoon.

“The 517 Vashi-Santa Cruz bus route is usually used by traders to transport money and it is infamous as the ‘hawala’ bus route. In many such robberies, people don’t lodge a complaint since it also happens to be unaccounted wealth.

The gang was, however, stunned after finding ornaments in the bag. The accused have been sent to police custody till Wednesday,” said joint commissioner of police — crime, Atulchandra Kulkarni.
