Opposition leader seeks removal of offensive words
Opposition leader in the Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil on Thursday requested the Speaker to expunge objectionable words used by a Shiv Sena MLA against suspended MIM legislator Waris Pathan. Speaker Haribhau Bagde said the words would be removed, but asked the legislators why they did not suggest it earlier when the incident took place on Wednesday.
The controversy started after Mr Pathan refused to chant the slogan ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. All-party MLAs objected to the act and proposed Mr Pathan’s suspension, leading to chaos in the house.
While speaking on the issue, senior Shiv Sena MLA Gulabrao Patil termed MIM legislators ‘dogs’. In a highly emotional speech proving one’s loyalty towards the nation, Mr Patil said, “Iss desh me rahana hoga to kutto Bharat Mata Ki Jai bolana hoga (if dogs have to live in the country they should chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai).” However, none of the leaders objected to the Mr Patil’s speech, but were seen busy supporting the suspension of the MIM legislator. Mr Patil’s remarks were ignored by the other legislators and also by the deputy speaker Yogesh Sagar, who was in the chair then. A day after, Mr Vikhe-Patil who supported the suspension, demanded that objectionable words used by Mr Patil be expunged. “I request you, sir, to remove the unparliamentary words used by Shiv Sena MLA yesterday from the record,” he said.
“The words should have been removed yesterday itself. But the deputy speaker was in the chair. At least the legislators should have pointed it out immediately,” the Speaker said.
