Anguished with the Speaker’s decision to not allow discussion on the rape case in Kopardi of the Ahmednagar district, main Opposition parties Congress and NCP are set to bring a no-confidence motion against the Speaker of the Assembly, Haribhau Bagade. However, no notice was submitted with the parliamentary administrative department of the state legislature.

Opposition Congress and NCP failed to corner the ruling Devendra Fadnavis government over the Kopardi rape case on the opening day of the Monsoon Session in the State Assembly. Congress legislators entered Vidhan Bhavan premises with a banner demanding probe into the rape case.

The Opposition tried to bring in the adjournment motion and demanded that a discussion be held. Speaker Bagade denied permission. Members of the Opposition went to the Well and shouted slogans against the government.

Chief minister Fadnavis intervened and assured the House that senior advocate Ujjwal Nikam will be appointed as a government public prosecutor and the case will be tried in a fast-track court.

Mr Bagade then conducted remaining business of the House. When Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil demanded debate on the rape case, however, Mr Bagade announced adjournment of the House for the whole day.

Angry with the Speaker, Congress and NCP leaders met and decided to bring in a no-confidence motion against him.

Though there was no official confirmation of this, senior NCP legislator and former Speaker of Assembly Dilip Walse-Patil indicated that the party leadership in the Assembly could consider such a motion.

However, even if a notice for no-confidence motion is given it needs to complete a period of 14 days before it comes to the House for the debate, he said. This means that there can’t be any action over the issue tomorrow, Mr Patil added.
