Civic activists have expressed serious concerns over the revised draft development plan (RDDP) 2034 saying that opening up of salt pan and Aarey Colony land are ecological disasters in the making. The reclamation of Cuffe Parade as a Central Park to create public open spaces would also be environmentally damaging, they have warned.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has in its RDDP proposed to reserve 642 acres of salt pan land for affordable houses and 5,189 acres of no-development zones for affordable housing.
However, despite Aarey Colony being reserved as a no-development zone, the construction of Metro Car Shed would be allowed there. The BMC has also planned to set up 300 acres Central Park through reclamation at Cuffe Parade.
However, members of the campaign Hamara Shehar Mumbai Abhiyaan said that the reclamation of Cuffe Parade as a Central Park for creating public open spaces is not justified, as it is an environmentally damaging proposition.
Sitaram Shelar, a member of the campaign, said that reclamation of Cuffe Parade as a Central Park is surprising considering the fact that the area is an MMRDA special planning area and moreover, reclamation for creating a public open spaces is not justified.
