Only 38 per cent desilting work complete

With the monsoon a little over a month away, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has managed to finish just about 38 per cent of the mandatory nullah desilting work. Before the monsoon sets in, the civic body is expected to complete over 60 per cent of the work, to ensure a deluge-free monsoon. Despite the fact that the BMC had completed about the same amount of desilting work, at about 36 per cent of the total, this time last year, at the first instance of heavy rainfall on June 19, the entire city was brought to a stand still.

Taking cognisance of the matter, municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta has directed ward officials to ensure that all desilting work of major and minor nullahs should be completed before the monsoon this year at a monthly review meeting that was held on Saturday.

Moreover, ahead of the monsoons, Mr Mehta also directed all officials to reinstate roads to their original quality before May 31. All road work or digging of roads for other purposes undertaken currently have to be completed by May 15, following which they have to be reinstated in time for the first monsoon.

Besides, as a follow up to the directions given to assistant commissioners in a previous monthly review meeting, Mr Mehta directed them to ensure that the primary level provisions at all cemeteries in the city are updated.

This included construction of compound walls and a main gate, public amenities such as toilets, drinking water facility, a seating arrangement, and over all maintenance. There are a total of 68 cemeteries within the municipal corporation’s limit.
