Central Railway (CR) has increased the number of fast trains that will halt at Ghatkopar by four, keeping in mind that it has become an important switching point for those who use the Metro.
The increase in number of trains has been made effective since Saturday, along with the new timetable with 13 new services and five extended services on the mainline. A CR official on condition of anonymity said that a lot of commuters had registered the demand in the Ghatkopar Station Master’s Book.
“The demand for more number of fast trains halting at Ghatkopar has been there since the Metro started. Although our plan is to eventually stop at least three-fourth of fast services at Ghatkopar, we have just increased the number by four,” said the official.
The new services include: CST to Titwala which departs at 9.12 pm, CST to Titwala at 9.18 pm and Karjat to CST at 5.53 pm. Out of 242 fast services, 202 used to halt at Ghatkopar, which has now been increased to 206.
Many commuters on CR’s mainline and Harbour often use Ghatkopar as a point of access for the Metro. Ashok Kamble (45), who lives in Thane and uses the Metro to travel to his sister’s place in Andheri, said. “Having a fast train that stops at Ghatkopar is a boon on the days I want to go to my sister’s place. If these services are being increased, there is nothing like it,” he said.
Meanwhile Metro 1, which began services from Ghatkopar to Versova on June 8, 2014, has seen an increase in the number of commuters.
