No New Universities Act; polls postponed

The higher education ministry has said elections to various authoritative bodies of the universities will be held only next year, as the New Universities Act had not been passed.
The University of Mumbai has meanwhile said it would conduct admissions this year if there is no communication from the government regarding the same.
With nearly two years gone since the senate of various universities in the state completing their terms, varsities have been facing huge administrative problems.
With the state government dithering over bringing the new Maharashtra Universities Act, some universities said they would conduct elections this year regardless of the new Act coming into force.
MU registrar Dr M.A. Khan has said that the university would conduct the elections this year.
However, the higher education ministry in a bid to pre-empt any such action by the university, said it would be issuing a resolution regarding the elections soon.
“Senate elections have been delayed and the new Act had some changes in that composition of the members. Hence elections cannot be held before that. As the new Act is expected to come into force by next year, elections will be held thereafter. A resolution regarding the same will be issued before the end of the month,” said an official of the higher and technical education ministry.
However, former senate member Sanjay Wairal said, “If the Act is not introduced next year, the losses will be tremendous and it’s effects irreversible.”
