While the Union home ministry awaits a report from the Mumbai police on the assault case against actor Saif Ali Khan in connection with his brawl at a Colaba restaurant in February 2012, the police has said that they are yet to receive any such communication from the Central government, despite the letter being sent on August 14, last year. The report was sought after RTI activist Subhash Agrawal demanded that Khan be stripped of his Padma Shri award in light of the criminal investigation against him.
According to a PTI report, the Union ministry report had responded to Mr Agrawal’s application saying that the Mumbai police had been “reminded to expedite the matter” (send the report), in its reply. “I am unaware of any such communication from the Union home ministry for a report on the Saif Ali Khan case since replies to higher authorities are sent through offices of senior officers. I will, however, personally check with the police station,” said additional CP (south region) Krishna Prakash. While senior PI Rameshwar Suple had the same response, ACP (Colaba division) Rajendra Chavan was not available for comment despite repeated attempts.
Saif, who was in the company of his wife Kareena Kapoor Khan, her sister Karisma, actors Malaika Arora Khan, Amrita Arora and his friends Shakeel Ladak and Bilal Amrohi, allegedly assaulted a South Africa-based businessman Iqbal Mir Sharma and his father after Mr Sharma asked them to turn down their noisy banter. Saif first allegedly threatened the businessman and then punched him in the nose following which the actor along with Ladak and Amrohi was arrested on assault charges in response to a complaint filed by Mr Sharma. The incident was captured on the hotel’s CCTV cameras. A chargesheet was filed against the three in December the same year.
