No clarity on shifts for polytechnics

With SSC results to be declared on June 6, the administration and managements of aided and government-run polytechnics are in the dark about the status of running the second shift.
The government has not made any announcement in this regard after suggesting discontinuation of the second shifts due to lack of funds to pay the teachers and employees.
Dr R.P. Bharate, vice-principal of the Government Polytechnic at Bandra (E), said that with the SSC results being declared on June 6, the polytechnics would be required to start admissions immediately but in the absence of any clarity about the second shift, the institutions were confused as to whether to admit students for the same.
“Most government run polytechnics in the state are offering dual shifts as there is a high demand for the courses and lack of institutions. However, as technical education minister Vinod Tawde said that the same would be discontinued as the government did not have sufficient funds to pay the salaries of teachers and employees, the institutions are left in a dilemma. After Mr Tawde made the statement nothing has come of it with the exception of a survey, results of which are unknown,” said Dr Bharate, who is also the secretary of the grants and regular salary follow up committee of aided institutions.
He said that the officials were also unaware of the status of second shifts. “I met the secretary of technical education on May 31 in this regards and asked for clarification with regards to the governments stand on the second shift, but even they were unable to give a satisfactory response,” said Dr Bharate.
When asked about the same through a message, Mr Tawde did not respond.
In Maharashtra, there are around 488 government-run polytechnics.
