No off for BMC officials till desilting work is completed

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) employees will now work seven days a week, and drop all leaves and weekly-offs, to ensure that Mumbai does not flood during the monsoon this season. Municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta on Monday cancelled the holidays of all top civic officials in the BMC, including all deputy municipal commissioners and the 24 ward level assistant commissioners, until further orders are issued.
This decision has been taken to keep 24X7 micro-level vigil on desilting work in the city. Meanwhile, after facing flak for lagging behind in desilting preparations in comparison to last year, the administration has increased the number of officials and machinery involved in the desilting work by four times since last Friday, after the civic body issued official clarification of the status of desilting work in the city.
On Friday, the BMC had completed up to 66 per cent desilting of major nullahs, 35 per cent of minor nullahs.
Vijay Balamvar, deputy municipal commissioner of the solid waste management department said, “Until last Friday, work in five wards of the suburbs was completed only up to 20 per cent. After that, we have increased the working days and machinery at work and have managed to complete up to 60 per cent work in all wards.”
