NMC to supply water for six days in bid to save water

The Nashik Municipal Corporation has decided to supply water for six days per week or have a one-day holiday every week to extend the remaining water in Gangapur reservoir, which supplies water to Nashik city. Later, water will be supplied five days a week, which was decided during the NMC meeting.
Water was recently released to Jayakwadi in Aurangabad from the already low water stock and was widely opposed by all political parties, except the BJP. However, party MLAs later contested the issue with the ministry.
The deputy mayor Gurmeet Singh Bagga told The Asian Age on Tuesday that the decision was taken after scrutinising the demand and supply ratio. “More water is required during March and May. However, this calculation was based on tentative figures. Once we get the actual detailed figures, the water cuts might be more. The cuts will be effective from next week,” Mr Bagga said.
Earlier, it was decided that water be released once a day. Presently, some areas like Old Nashik City get water twice a day. Later it was decided to observe a complete day’s cut to save the water and make it run for 243 days, mayor Ashok Murtadak said.
The NMC also decided to acquire all wells, bore wells and water sources in the city as the 2,700 MCFt water in Gangapur reservoir will not suffice till July 31 next year. “Water has not been drawn from many wells and bore wells, while some bore wells are not working,” said Mr Bagga.
