Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former chairman of the State Legislative Council Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar will be re-elected as chairman of the Upper House during a special session to be held at Vidhan Bhavan on Friday. The formalities will be completed so that he can conduct business of the House during the Monsoon Session of the Legislature.
Mr Nimbalkar’s term as chairman ended on July 7 and he was re-elected unopposed last month. The special session is just a formality to choose him as chairman of the House.
According to Girish Bapat, minister for parliamentary affairs, the session will begin at 10 am at Central Hall of Vidhan Bhavan.
He will be administered oath by the pro-tem chairman. “Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao has chosen Jayant Patil of the Peasants and Workers Party as pro-tem chairman,” he said.
The parliamentary affairs department and the Vidhan Bhavan administrative department had recommended five names to Raj Bhavan to select as pro-tem chairman, including former chairman and senior Congress member Shivajirao Deshmukh, Shiv Sena’s Dr Neelam Gorhe, Congress’s Chandrakant Raghuwanshi, PWP’s Mr Patil and BJP’s Ramnath Mote. Meanwhile, Mr Bapat also said that deputy chairman of the House could not be elected at the same time as the chairman. “The chairman has right to finalise the election programme to elect the deputy chairman,” he said.
Vasant Davkhare, the former vice-chairman was defeated in the Thane local body constituency election against Shiv Sena’s Ravindra Phatak. Congress has claimed it has a right to the vice-chairman post, however, a programme on election to the post is expected to be announced in the Monsoon Session.
