A special NIA court in the city recently rejected bail application filed by two of the five accused arrested for conspiring to kill prominent political leaders and journalists in Bangalore. The Anti-terrorist Squad (ATS) had arrested three persons from Nanded and the case was transferred to NIA.
The ATS in August 2008 had arrested five persons from different parts of Nanded on charges that they were connected with terrorist outfits Lashkar-e-Taiyba (LET) and Harkat-ul-Jehad (HUJ). ATS sleuths had claimed that the accused were planning to target prominent Hindu political leaders and journalists in Nanded and Bangalore and had even recovered revolvers and cartridges from the accused. While Mohd Muzammil, Mohd Sadique, Mohd Iliyas and Mohd Irfan were detained in Mumbai, another accused, Mohd Akram, was lodged in Bangalore jail in connection with some other case. Although ATS had arrested these accused, the case was later transferred to NIA.
Of the arrested accused, Muzammil and Sadique had filed for bail through advocates Sharif Shaikh and Abhishek Pandey, respectively, contending that they had been implicated in a false case and there was “absolutely no evidence” against them that they were involved in terrorist activities, planned to eliminate anyone, attended any conspiracy meeting or used weapons allegedly recovered from them.
The bail applicants’ lawyers too claimed that they did not communicate by email in code language with members of any banned outfit.
