Right after celebrating its two-year anniversary in April this year, the need to build a second line between Virar and Dahanu was apparent on Monday when the already, limited services in the section had gone for a toss when 11 coaches of a goods container derailed near Dahanu.
The plan of quadrupling the line was proposed in the Railway Budget for the year 2015-16 but officials said that this too has a possibility of seeing. “When the section was opened as a suburban one in 2013, there was a lot of difference of opinion that. Many said that the railways should wait for a few more years until the second track is place,” said an official on the condition of anonymity.
Currently, the Central Railways (CR) mainline and the Western Railway (WR) up to Virar is a quadruple line that is it has four tracks out which two are fast and two are slow. “The section was inducted as a suburban section in April last year by the then railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal as a way to show that something is being given to Mumbai,” added the official.
According to the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation, the expenditure over quadrupling of the sections stands at Rs 3,555 crore.
