Congress leader Narayan Rane on Wednesday visited Thane Civil Hospital and met party leader, Sandip Sawant, who was allegedly beaten up by Mr Narayan’s son, Nilesh.
The senior leader, however, refused to comment on the issue terming it a police matter.
Mr Narayan went to Thane Civil Hospital to meet the injured Mr Sawant around 1 pm. He asked about Mr Sawant’s health and talked to him for 15 minutes.
The Congress leader also enquired after Mr Sawant’s health with the doctor. “Mr Sawant is a very good party worker and very close to me. I heard about the attack on him but I don’t know who is involved in the matter.
The police is already investigating the case and soon, we will come to know about the accused,” Mr Rane stated. Meanwhile, the Thane police has transferred the case to the Chiplun police. All formalities have been done. Speaking about the probe into the matter, the Thane police’s public relations officer said, “Initially, the investigation will be handled by the Chiplun police but if they need any help from our side, we are ready to provide that.”
The Thane police on Tuesday registered a case against Nilesh and three others under Sections 323 (assault), 341 (wrongful restraint) 363 (kidnapping) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
Mr Sawant’s wife has urged the police to take the necessary action against Nilesh. According to the police, the victim is the taluka president of Congress in Chiplun.
Mr Sawant claimed that Nilesh and his followers had allegedly abducted Mr Sawant from his house because he had failed to attend a party meeting and rally, on Sunday. He further alleged that they then held him in Mr Rane’s Juhu Bungalow.
They had allegedly beaten him up so badly that he could not walk properly, Mr Sawant claimed. The next day, they left him at his in-laws house near Jogeshwari. Later, Mr Sawant’s maternal uncle took him to his place in Thane and got him admitted to the hospital.
