An accused, Mahendra Pal, who had allegedly stabbed his friend to death in broad daylight on Virar skywalk a few days ago, escaped from the Vasai court area on Monday afternoon.

Pal was on a regular visit to the court from Thane jail, where he had been lodged. The moment the police van in which he was travelling stopped at court, Pal, pushing an officer aside, jumped out and made a run for it. To nab him, officials have blockaded the area and increased check post checkings, the police said.

Commenting on the incident, a senior Vasai police station official said Pal would be arrested soon.

In April, an unidentified man was sleeping on platform no. 7 when Pal (28), a resident of Dahisar, woke him up. According to police officials, a heated argument ensued, during which the victim started to flee. However, Pal chased him, brandishing a knife. The victim ran all over the platform to hide, and later ran up to the bridge, with Pal in hot pursuit. Pal then stabbed the victim in full public view.

The Virar police patrolling team, which was at the bridge, chased Pal and eventually caught him. The victim was rushed to a government hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.
