The University of Mumbai has reinstated the four employees from the examination section of the university who had been suspended on charges of corruption after the ACB that was investigating the matter gave them a clean chit. According to university authorities, the employees have been reinstated pending an in-service departmental inquiry, the report of which is expected within three to four months.

Rupesh Malusare, president of the Mumbai Vidyapeeth Karmachari Sangh (MVKS) that had been demanding their reinstatement, said, “We are happy that our consistent demands have paid off and the university has reinstated the employees pending the departmental inquiry,” said Mr Malusare. He added that MVKS had found that the ACB in its chargesheet had incriminated the paanwala for collecting amounts but had not mentioned the name of any of the four suspended employees; hence the union demanded the reinstatement of the employees.

The four accused namely Chetan Kamalallu, assistant registrar, Rajashree Chavan, superintendent, Preeti Rawool, clerk and Uttan Jaitapkar, junior clerk had been suspended in June last year after the Dr Madhu Nair committee constituted by the university found they could be involved with Anil Salian, the paanwala near the university campus at Kalina who was promising students of increased marks in exchange for money. However, the ACB chargesheet while pointing to Salians link did not mention the names of the accused.
