Students appearing for the fifth semester exam of the University of Mumbai in the Commerce stream, which will commence from October 25, were left panic-stricken after the hall ticket issued to them inadvertently mentioned a paper scheduled for October 21. The faulty hall tickets were issued online.
When the gaffe was brought to its notice, the university clarified that the inadvertent mistake was done by the service provider contracted by the university to issue hall tickets and mark sheets. The university clarified that the examinees need not be unduly worried, as the exam would not be conducted from October 21.
According to a professor from a suburban college, he started getting panic calls from students since Wednesday evening, asking how the financial accounting and auditing paper of the fifth semester was scheduled on October 21 while the university had earlier announced that it would begin on October 25.
“The students said that the university had put up the hall ticket and, on downloading the same, they found that the exam were starting on October 21. I was surprised by the students’ revelation and tried to clarify it with the principal of our college who referred it to the university,” said the professor who did not wish to be named.
“The examination section of the University of Mumbai said they would inquire into the problem,” he said.
The university had announced that an exam schedule issued previously had been changed due to clashes with other professional exams. However, the hall ticket created a furore among the students.
On being contacted, Mumbai University’s registrar Dr M.A. Khan told The Asian Age, “We had not finalised the entire exam programme, but the MKCL went ahead and published the link for downloading the hall tickets as a result of which the confusion was created.” He said, “The exam mentioned in the hall ticket will not be conducted and students should refer to the circular mentioned on the university website.”
Sainath Durge of Yuva Sena said, “The university should take action against MKCL for the gaffe, which put the students in a state of panic and confusion. MKCL has been creating many problems and due to their monopoly think they can get away with any mistakes. We have demanded immediate discontinuation of the contract with MKCL.”
