Mumbai sees 8th heart transplant

The city witnessed the eight heart transplant on Saturday when a 28-year-old man suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy received a heart from a brain dead patient from Aurangabad.

The city witnessed the eight heart transplant on Saturday when a 28-year-old man suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy received a heart from a brain dead patient from Aurangabad. Through green corridor, the heart was transported to the hospital Mumbai in 1hr 19mins covering a distance of 276.2km.

The surgery was made possible when the family of the 39-year-old donor agreed to donate his organs. The donor was suffering from brain stem bleed.

While the heart was dispatched to Fortis Hospital at Mumbai, the liver and kidneys were sent for deserving candidates at Pune and Aurangabad.

With the help of traffic and airport authorities, as soon as the donor’s heart left from Seth Nandlal Dhoot Hospital and reached Fortis Hospital, Mulund, the transplant surgery commenced immediately.

The green corridor was laid out by city’s traffic authorities from domestic airport to military road – Santa Cruz Chembur Link Road - Chedda Nagar to Eastern Express Highway — Airoli Junction and finally to Fortis Hospital, Mulund.

Conducting surgeon Dr Anvay Mulay, head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “The surgery has been completed; the next 48-72 hours will be critical and the patient will be monitored round the clock.”

Dr S. Narayani, zonal director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund said, “This being the eight heart transplant in the past six months, we have successfully established that patients can now seek aid from within the state.”
