Mumbai schools to get 5-day break for Ganpati
The deputy director of education (DYDE) has announced a five-day holiday for the Ganpati festival and one-day holiday for the Gokul Ashtami festival for all schools in Mumbai on Tuesday.
The deputy director of education (DYDE) has announced a five-day holiday for the Ganpati festival and one-day holiday for the Gokul Ashtami festival for all schools in Mumbai on Tuesday. The directions were issued by deputy director B.B. Chavan following a representation by the students’ wing of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.
Following a state government announcement of a day’s holiday on Thursday, August 25 in lieu of Gopal Kala or Dahi Handi festival, MNVS activists approached the DYDE, asking him to issue an order for a holiday in all city schools.
“Mr Chavan acceded to our request and said that a notification about the one-day holiday would be sent to all schools on Wednesday,” said Akhil Chitre, vice-president of MNVS who met Mr Chavan along with former University of Mumbai senate member Sudhakar Tamboli and vice-presidents Santosh Gangurde and Chetan Pednekar.
“Mr Chavan also assured us that the five-day holiday for the Ganpati festival for all schools would also be announced soon,” said Mr Chitre, adding that they had also handed over a letter from MNVS president Aditya Shirodkar to Mr Chavan demanding integration of the holidays in the annual academic calendar of schools for future too.
Earlier, MNVS had met officials of Mumbai University and had placed the same demands for holidays for Dahi Handi and Ganpati festival, which were readily accepted. “The university will issue a circular announcing the holidays to all its departments and affiliated colleges by Wednesday,” added Mr Chitre.
