Mumbai’s 11th heart transplant at fortis a success

Fortis Hospital, Mulund, discharged their 11th heart transplant patient, 14 days after conducting the transplant. The 36-year-old patient with dilated cardiomyopathy from Lonavala, got a new lease of life on February 12 when a 38-year-old brain dead patient from Panvel donated his heart.

The patient’s brother, who was present at the time of discharge, said, “This surgery is nothing short of a miracle for us, we are very happy that he’s coming home. Now, we have to take proper precautions, avoid infections and limit external contact for him to recover faster.”

The donor heart was retrieved by Dr Sanjeev Jadhav, Cardio Vascular and Thoracic Surgeon, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, at MGM Hospital, Vashi, early morning on February 12 and transported to Fortis Hospital, Mulund, for the transplant. Transportation of the heart was completed in just 14 minutes through a 19-km Green Corridor from Vashi to Mulund, created with the help of traffic authorities.

Dr Anvay Mulay from Fortis, who operated on him, said, “It is indeed a moment of triumph for us to see the 11th heart transplant patient go back home today.”
