Mumbai: Caretaker dead after fatal fall

A 27-year-old female caretaker was found dead after she fell from the 19th floor of Maker Towers in Cuffe Parade in south Mumbai in the early hours of Saturday.

A 27-year-old female caretaker was found dead after she fell from the 19th floor of Maker Towers in Cuffe Parade in south Mumbai in the early hours of Saturday.

The police said the woman, Shamita Tambe, was employed by Ramesh Bhojwani (65), who is handicapped.

On Friday, Bhojwani held his birthday party at the apartment for which he invited around 30 people including his daughters and other relatives. The incident took place after the party.

The police said it is suspecting the possible role of four cooks who were hired for the party as well as another woman caretaker who was also at the scene. The police has registered a case of accidental death at the moment and is probing if there is any foul play in the incident.

The incident came to light around at 8.30 am, when a woman residing on the first floor came to the balcony of her apartment to drink tea and saw the body lying in a pool of blood.

She immediately informed security guards and society members after which the police was informed.

Shamita stayed in the same neighbourhood and was employed by Bhojwani for the past six months.

Cuffe Parade police officials said the deceased worked in a shift and that there was another woman who worked as nurse-cum-caretaker at the residence.

On Friday, Shamita was on the night shift on account of the party. The other caretaker was also on duty.

As per preliminary investigations, the senior citizen had hired four cooks for the birthday party.

According to the statements of three cooks, they had their own party in the kitchen along with the two caretakers after the conclusion of the party. Shamita then went and sat on the kitchen window sill, lost her balance and came crashing into the elevated parking on the first floor at around 1.30 am.

“There is no clarity if she was pushed or if it’s a case of suicide or accidental fall,” said Manoj Kumar Sharma, deputy commissioner of police, zone I.

“We are recording statements of all the guests who attended the party to get further clarity on the incident. We have also called her husband and will question him to know if there was any problem. Her death is suspicious and we are investigating the matter,” Mr Sharma further said.

The postmortem report is awaited. Officials said the cooks and the other caretaker were scared after Shamita fell down and fled the apartment. Officials said they had to track down the residence of Bhojwani where Shamita worked because he did not come forward to inform them by himself.
