MUHS to set up more colleges
The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has announced that new colleges would be set up to standardise the quality of health services across the state. The announcement was made during the perspective plan meeting held by the university last week wherein regions where there are few health science colleges, will be sanctioned new ones to balance out the difference and bring those regions at par with metropolitan areas with regards to health services availability.
An MUHS spokesperson said that the perspective plan was made for the year 2017-2022 for which meetings of officials and stakeholders were held in Mumbai, Aurangabad, Pune and Nagpur. “The feedback from these meetings was also included while preparing the five-year perspective plan,” said the spokesperson.
The meeting was chaired by the newly-appointed vice-chancellor Dr Dilip Mhaisekar and registrar Dr Kashinath Gharkal. “The perspective plan has been made as per the population in the state and new colleges have been allotted based on the same. The thrust has been on providing uniform medical services throughout the state for which standardised medical and health service education is a must. To achieve this, medical colleges in adivasi and backward regions of the state will be started,” said Dr Mhaisekar.
The perspective plan will also include the number of the colleges required for different health sciences like medical, dental, ayurvedic, unani, nursing and para medical colleges based on the population distribution of the state and the requirement of regions.
The perspective plan has received the go-ahead from the academic and management council of the university that had approved the proposal in February itself. “The plan will now be sent to the government for final approval and implementation. Once approved, interested managements will be asked to submit their proposals with details of their financial and infrastructural readiness for starting the new colleges before being sanctioned the same,” said the MUHS spokesperson.
