The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has floated bids for the tenth time to lease out the food mall area of 3,158 square metre at Kusgaon connector near Lonavala on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

Earlier this year, the legislature’s public undertaking committee had asked the state government to act against MSRDC officials who chose the wrong location for construction of food mall on the Expressway constructed back in 2006. The legislature’s public undertaking committee said that due to the location being inappropriate, MSRDC was incurring losses to the tune of Rs 7 crore, for which, it should act against MSRDC officials. The report of the legislature’s public undertaking committee suggested that the location was not apt for a food mall and MSRDC should consider constructing a resort or a function hall.

However, MSRDC begged to differ. Explaining why a food mall was appropriate, a MSRDC official said, “The mall is on the junction of both NH-4 and the Expressway, a very ideal place for a food mall, considering the activities MSRDC is going to carry out on the Expressway.” Besides the mall, there is an adjacent open plot admeasuring 3,289 square metres also to be given on lease, which can be used as parking for visitors to the mall.
