MSRDC floats bids for crash barriers on Expressway
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has floated bids for installation of tensile steel wire rope that acts as a crash barrier on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The installation will take place on the 25-km stretch where accident-prone spots have been identified.
“The wires will help hold back vehicles that could have gone out of control after crossing the median and prevent them from crashing into vehicles from the opposite direction,” said Sanjay Gurgunde, executive engineer, MSRDC.
In 2014 the MSRDC carried out the same work on a 12-km stretch. The pilot project of installing tensile steel wire ropes was carried out back in 2013, when a stretch of 2.5 km at Kamshet was wired.
“The state highway police helped by suggesting the accident-prone spots. Mainly the spot is in the ghat section,” added Mr Gurgunde.
MSRDC officials said vehicles crash into those coming from the opposite direction because drivers maintain a speed of 100 kmph on curves and later lose control over their vehicles.
MSRDC is also working towards augmentation of the Expressway after which an additional missing lane will be constructed to run parallel to the current Expressway.
