The Charkop police has arrested a Marathi film producer, who, on the pretext of providing Mhada flats, cheated a woman.

The victim approached the Charkop police on December 29 and informed officials that the film producer had promised to give her two Mhada flats, towards which, she took '23.5 lakh from her. Later, when she confronted the producer and asked for her money, the latter gave her four cheques which were returned by the bank owing to insufficient funds in the producer’s account.

The accused has been identified as Rajni Pandit, who stays in sector eight of Charkop. The police arrested Ms Pandit on December 30, after which, she was produced in court. The court sent her to police custody till January 2, 2016.

Police suspect that the 2015 Marathi film Aashiyana was produced by Ms Pandit with the amount she took from the victim. Officials also suspect that Ms Pandit has cheated others in the past on the pretext of giving them a Mhada flat.

The victim (52) used to stay on rent in Ms Pandit’s flat and told Ms Pandit that she wanted to own a house. To this, Ms Pandit told her she knew many people and could help her get a Mhada flat. Between 2011 and 2014, Ms Pandit told the victim that she will provide her two Mhada flats for which the victim would have to pay her '18 lakh per flat. The victim paid a total '23.5 lakh to Ms Pandit for the flats. When she started asking Ms Pandit for the papers and possession of the flats as well as their location, Ms Pandit avoided giving her proper answers.

After much persuasion, Ms Pandit gave the victim a few legal documents but when the victim approached the flat mentioned in the documents, she came to know that the documents had been forged and she had been conned by Ms Pandit. That’s when she approached Ms Pandit once again and demanded her money back. Ms Pandit gave her four cheques amounting to '23.5 lakh but the cheques bounced.
