It is confirmed that the motorguard instead of the motorman drove the empty train that jumped the bumper at CST at 2.27 am early Tuesday morning. However, nobody was injured, as platform no. 5, where the incident occurred, was empty that time. The incident also did not affect the schedule of suburban trains on the central line.
According the Indian Railways rulebook, motorguards can never drive a train under any circumstance, as they have no training to do so. As a result of which the guard, Shankar Naik, has been suspended and the motorman,Vijay Khanviklkaras, has been removed from duty along with two other senior officials who were at the scene during the incident.
A senior official, on the condition of anonymity, said, “It looks like the motorman took the train towards Masjid end so that they could reverse into platform no. 5 since it was a 15-coach car and had no space to be parked in the car shed.
According to rule, after he does this he is supposed to switch with the guard who is at the CST end and reverse the train into platform no.5, according to procedure but it looks like he got lazy and told the guard to reverse it,” said the official.
The Central Railway (CR) has constituted a four-member panel with junior-grade officers who will look into the matter. When asked if the information of the guard driving the train was true, CR general manager Sunil Kumar Sood replied in the affirmative.
