The teachers affiliated from unaided schools and belonging to various organisations have found support in unaided schools in Mumbai too, but only a few will remain shut.
Teachers in the rest of the schools will wear a black band as a mark of solidarity with the aggrieved teachers. According to Prashant Redij, convenor of Maharashtra State Permanently Unaided Schools Association, thousands of teachers had converged at Aurangabad to protest against the government's unwillingness to start grant to unaided schools as per a 2009 high court order. “The teachers had blocked roads and railways and were agitating peacefully when the police started lathi charging them. The unprovoked attack left many teachers grievously injured and some had to be hospitalised. The government, however, remained silent ,” said Mr Redij. He added that while all unaided schools in the entire state would remain shut on Thursday, unaided schools that are not part of the agitating organizations would remain functional.
In all, only 58 schools in Mumbai would remain shut.
