The mortal remains of martyred soldier Shankar Chandrabhan Shinde, (35) who died in a fight with militants in Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir, was brought to Ojhar Air Force airport by a special plane on Sunday evening.

The soldier is a resident of Bhayale village of Chandwad tehsil of Nashik district.

Another martyr who also died in the fight — Sahadev Maruti More — is from Vijapur in Karnataka.

Major General J.S. Bedi, Brigadier P.R. Murali, Air Commodore Vibhas Pande, police superintendent Sanjay Mohite and other dignitaries offered floral tributes to the soldier.

The deceased’s brothers Keshav, Kailash and Ambadas were also present on the occasion. The body was taken to Artillery Centre in Nashik and the last rites will be performed on Monday.

Militants had holed up in a house in Marseri village in Kupwara on Friday night. Jawans of National Rifles, Grenadiers and Maratha Regiment along with the police surrounded the area and were fired upon by the militants. The firefight continued till Saturday afternoon, in which two Jawans and five militants were killed.

Shinde is survived by his wife Suvarna, six-year-old daughter Vaishnavi ad one-and-a-half-year-old son Om and his parents, brothers and two sisters. Shinde’s cousin said that Shinde joined the army when he was 17 years old and was posted in Kashmir. Bhayale village has a population of around 1,400 people but has 85 servicemen. In fact the village is known as the ‘village of Jawans’.
